Housing Options

I can't much believe that I'm even considering this but...

I think I might actually be contemplating moving into a mobile home.

I've been in the apartment I'm renting now for six months and just found out that the rent is going to go up $40/m to almost $500/m for a 1br/1ba. Now I know that there are parts of the USA where that's insanely low but I don't live in one of those areas. The average home price in my area is around 100K to 150K and an apartment like I'm in, until the last couple of years anyway, would have run around $300-$350/m.

Prices have gone up every time the lease is up but at this point I'm having to face the fact that in a year or two, I'm not going to be able to afford to live here. Not to mention the fact that my mother is living with me and is stuck sleeping in the living room on a futon.

So when I found out about the rent increase, I started looking at existing homes in the area and the one home builder we have that specializes in low-income buyers. After investigating for a bit, I discovered that the new homes were out of the question, and the only existing homes I could afford were in areas of town that were. Not great. Really, *really* not great. Not to mention they were all at least 50 years old and incredibly run down.

So I'm looking at a bit of a problem. I went to a mobile home dealer in town, just to look, and found one that, on the inside is incredibly cute! It's a 2br/2ba 1065sqft that looks really nice with neutral colored carpet, wall colors, nice grade floors and counters, appliances included, even a washer and dryer, big living room big master with a great master bath! But on the outside....

It's a big, ugly box. A really, really ugly box. I look at it and wince. It's the kind of thing I used to drive past on the highway and think, "Thank God I don't live in one of those!"

But here's the problem I'm looking at. I can barely squeak by and afford this. Just barely. There's a good possibility that in a year and a half, I'm not going to be able to afford my apartment, or any other one for that matter. I can't afford a site-built home and the locations of the existing ones I can afford are out of the question.

It's really looking like this is my only option. But beyond my sense of aesthetics which is *completely* offended by this thing, no matter how much I love the inside (and I did love the inside!), these things *scare me*!!! I live in frigging tornado alley!! An F5 hit a town not 30 miles from where I live about 5 years ago and *leveled it*. An underground storm shelter would be my #1 priority once I got moved but it would still be a bit before I could save the money to get it built. It just feels like a terrifying risk to take, not to mention the added responsibility that I really, really don't want (see a couple of posts back for my fear of commitment issues), but at this point, I really don't know that I have a choice.

Sometimes it really sucks being a grown up, especially when you're responsible for your parent(s).

between a rock & a hard place....
I feel for you.

that's why we should never say "I'd never" because one day we might have to...

I've learned that, the older I get. I try my very best not to say it anymore at all because it just feels like waving my arms and *begging* for Murphy's Law to strike me down where I stand. :G:

Thanks for commiserating. They're running my credit right now and seeing what kind of a monthly figure they can come up with. I'm going to have to really think about it long and hard before I decide what to do.
